Meet Our New Alumni Coordinator: Joseph Wekesa

1. Tell us a little bit about your background.

My name is Joseph Wekesa Nyongesa. I am the first born of three sons. I am married to Lillian Wekesa. I am passionate about entrepreneurship having started a computer repair and maintenance business in early 2007 while in campus which supported me throughout my education. I was raised in a family of farmers in which one had to work hard to make it. I enjoy creativity, new challenges and concerns. That is why I love entrepreneurs. They find solutions to challenges and concerns through new ways of doing things and creating value.

I trained as a bio-mechanical and processing engineer, having missed studying medicine by just a few points! I did not take the course seriously till the second year after I realized the great global food security need! I discovered various opportunities in different industries. Apart from engaging in farming, I worked with various organizations like Acted- Kenya, an NGO which worked in East and West Pokot to provide modern farming methods. However, I felt the urge to serve and serve for God’s glory. This led me to join a school of ministry called Kingdom Academy to discover my purpose, calling and assignment. At that time, I encountered Sinapis, and I knew that this was where God would have me serve.

Disciple, ardent, curious, loyal, and social

3. What do you hope to accomplish in your new role?

I am excited about my new role because I believe this is a convergence of my calling and assignment, to be a disciple maker. For me, the great commission is not a great suggestion but the one vital and central theme that believers should live by! But you are God's chosen and special people.You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things he has done. The Scriptures say, 2 Peter 2:9 (Contemporary English Version)I believe everyone has a calling to “tell all the wonderful things God has done” and that is what I desire to accomplish. To mobilize the Sinapis family to “tell all the wonderful things God has done” through entrepreneurship!

4. What does a weekend day look like in the life of Joseph?

I love being with family and friends. Every first Saturday of the month, I have a meeting with the technical and sound team I serve with in my local church. We meet from 7 am then attend to other scheduled plans afterwards. On Sunday, if we don’t have a speaking engagement in other churches, we attend church together as a family where we serve in different departments. Sunday afternoons are always family times. We have a culture of cooking one specific meal and enjoying as a family!

5. If you were any character in the Bible, who would it be?

Paul. Paul was an entrepreneur with a successful tent making enterprise at the same time a great Apostle, living for the great commission of proclaiming the gospel. From his own words, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain” for the sake of Christ. Paul always challenges me every time I study his life. This man counted “all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ,” Philippians 3:8-9. What a big-picture paradigm of living life! Paul was so relational that he had men like Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord and sons like Timothy, to whom he entrusted the stewardship from God that is by faith. I desire to live such a life!
